A GPS For Caregiving
Jacklyn Ryan's story came at a time when our family was seeking a home caregiver for a relative with ALS. The information provided in her book has been a road map to our destination. If you want to know where you are going, ask someone who has been there! The individual stories are relatable and the questionnaire on hiring is very informative.

After reading this book it was quite apparent the author had done her homework.
As an RN, I worked hiring and overseeing home health aides in the late 1980's. Strict rules were in place and enforced. All the aides had classes and we had monthly meetings. I made monthly visits to the clients, when the aides were not present, and listened to the praises/complaints.
Times change and so does our health care. We have made many wonderful advances in treatments but we have gone to a business model instead of a patient care model in home care as well as hospital care. Her examples of client's stories are certainly a testament to that.
The author's recommendation of having an in-person advocate, if possible, is certainly good advice.

Very Informative….a MUST read!
This book is filled with personal accounts as well as others experience of elder abuse in nursing homes. I have my own personal experience as a caregiver and the author is spot on! I’ve reached the age when I’ve thought about these scenarios and pray that I am never at the mercy of some of the monsters who work in this field. There are good and bad employees working for agencies. in nursing homes, and in-home care. Many have experienced the worst case scenarios. This is a text book for those who have loved ones requiring this level of care. A definite must read for people of all ages.

It... gives helpful suggestions how to protect your own family from unscrupulous people. The stories are real and meant to give the reader an eye opener to what's happening with the increase for caregivers and the reasons we need regulations in regards to background checks, fingerprinting, and drug testing before strangers come into your loved ones homes.

I especially liked the questionnaire at the end of the book. Everyone should use it as a guidebook to senior caregivers. She is fighting the good fight and I salute her.

What EVERYONE NEEDS to know about home health care!
I am a filmmaker currently producing a documentary that exposes our broken long term care/nursing home system. A system that has been in dire need of major reform for decades. After reading Ms. Ryan's book, Caregivers Scaretakers, it seems that our home health care system - or lack thereof - is also in a desperate state. This book is so well researched and written. It is an important read for anyone planing on living a long life with dignity and quality.

This book not only tells heart-wrenching stories but also gives solutions and suggestions on how not to become a victim of the toxic system and add insult to injury when already dealing with finding a caring caregiver for a parent or another loved one.
I highly recommend this book to anyone because sooner or later, if the system is not completely changed, we all may face one of the situations the author so poignantly described in her book Cargivers-Scaretactics.

This book is both informative and disturbing. Disturbing in the sense that this kind of abuse of the elderly is so prevalent in our society. Jacci tells the story of her father and how he was preyed upon by caregivers, telemarketers and others in his advanced age. It is hard to believe that in our society, with all its checks and balances, that this massive loophole of elder abuse and fraud exists. I'm sure most readers will emphasize with various stories she weaves throughout the narrative of the book. Buy it, read it, learn from it and be prepared to take the proper care of your elderly loved ones.
5/5
Elder abuse takes many forms and Jaclyn has done her homework in exposing all forms. As she emphasizes scams can happen to anyone but the prevalence among seniors is cause for great concern of family members. As the caretaker of my husband who has Parkinson's Disease was recently scammed. He has a MBA from Duke, a PHD in psychology and was one of the smartest people I've ever known until his executive function diminished. When this happens all of the issues Jaclyn warns about are REAL possibilities for those whose loved ones are being cared for by an outside agency. I highly recommend this book if your parent or loved one is approaching needing outside care.
5/5
The author uses her personal experience to explain How to screen for a qualified caretaker, how to monitor caretakers, and how to set up a system to protect seniors from fraud.

I was so shocked by these stories, and the lack of protection from them! Jacklyn truly brought these issues to light in an intriguing and well written manner. Having retired parents myself, I now know what conversations and precautions to take right now. Thank you for this book, it is a jewel!

Know about these problems BEFORE you have to deal with them!! I liked it a lot!

I had some time to spend with your book this week. You speak the truth! I could have written most of Chapter 1 based on investigation files from when I was a detective in a retirement community. I have also received a cursing from telemarketers when confronted about multiple calls to my aging mother.
5/5
This book addresses a serious issue regarding the invisible abuse of the elderly. My family had a horrible experience with caretaker and government agencies abuse of power. My hope is that this book will enlighten loved ones on the overreach of government agencies as well as the caretakers.

Written in an easy to read format. I found the checklists in the back very useful.
